Kim Khamo is a first generation Assyrian-American artist based in Detroit. Drawn to ceramics as a means to connect with her heritage, she works primarily with stoneware and underglaze, building surface patterns that are rooted in Mesopotamian design. Influenced by ancient reliefs, myth, and architecture, she focuses on geometric motifs and linework to explore identity, diaspora, and cultural memory with intent to make what's often overlooked seen and felt. Each piece is a hand-painted reflection of a history wanting to be shared.
The name Nahrain is a reclamation of her Assyrian name given at baptism; one not used legally at birth due to fear of persecution. Nahrain translates to two rivers, referring to the land of Bet Nahrain (Assyria), or the land/home of two rivers.
